Summer 2023, Miguel was an active 11-year-old. He liked fishing, video games, and soccer. He was active in church and YMCA projects. On October 20th, 2023, while planning his Halloween costume, Miguel got a bloody nose. Unable to stop the bleeding, Miguel ended up at the Maple Grove ER. Miguel was later transferred to Children's Hospital, being diagnosed with B-Cell Leukemia. There Miguel and his family spent the next 103 days.
The first 5 weeks there were spent on the 5th floor (ICU) because of breathing difficulties and complications from the Chemo. Because of being confined to his bed, Miguel needed to be retaught how to walk and climb stairs. He was later moved from ICU to the 7th floor oncology unit. There during the month of December the Chemo was replaced with a new Immunotherapy, Blinatumomab. Miguel's immune system was allowed to come back from the side effects of the chemo.
Without the chemo side affects, Miguel started to become stronger. There was a celebration when his Physical Therapist counted him walking 100 steps. When taken off the feeding tube, he used the hospital menu to order pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Remote school started for 1 hour a day, and he is doing well.
Miguel came home the second week in February. He is still doing remote school and needs to go into the hospital 4 days for chemo every 2 weeks. He spends his days playing video games, reconnecting with people, family and friends. He will hopefully be strong enough to go back to school this Fall but will be going in and out of Children's Clinic and Hospital for Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy and OT for the next 2 and a half years.
